MRI Move

MRI Scanner to be Removed Thursday, April 15, 2021

PRESS RELEASE

After 14 years of serving patients, Saunders Medical Center is receiving a new MRI scanner as  part of the Radiology upgrade project.

At 7:30 am a hallway of windows will be removed and at approximately 9:30-10 am the old MRI  scanner magnet will be lifted. At 13,000 pounds, it will take about two hours to journey a short  walk of approximately 40 feet utilizing a roller system.

Just before 12 noon the magnet will be lifted outside by a crane for removal from the facility.

The MRI scanner is a GE 450 W 1.5 Tesla magnet. The scanner is a completely refurbished  system. New MRI equipment would cost over $1 million. When discussing the superb quality  this system offers it was decided to go with this unit, saving over $500,000.

The MRI scanner will improve patient comfort with reduced noise, shorter scan times, a wider  opening and less confined space. Also, the technicians will enjoy the user-friendly experience  with the new technology, as the old scanner required more manual technologist involvement.

“The image quality and technology has vastly improved in the past 14 years. We are excited to  provide continued superb care to our community with this upgraded MRI unit,” said Pat Dailey,  R.T., Imaging Services manager.

The project included three units: A MRI, CT and mobile x-ray. The CT portion of the project has  already been completed.

In addition, a portable x-ray unit has been utilized since August 2020. This unit allows  containment of the patient and immediate acquisition of the digital image versus post processing  the image in another location..

“For example, if a Covid-19 positive patient needs their lungs x-rayed, they can do this in close  proximity to the patient, rather then transporting a patient or post-processing the x-ray through  the facility. It is immediate and digital. This allows us to keep confine the virus, if needed, said  Dailey.

The MRI scanner, a GE 450 W 1.5 Tesla magnet refurbished system, will be moved to Saunders  Medical Center by mid-June, completing the Imaging Services upgrade.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging - MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to produce images  of body tissue and organs. The magnetic field excites and then relaxes protons of the body  causing an emission of radio signals. The signals are then processed by a computer to produce  an image.

The MRI scanner is a circular tube that has an opening in the center through which the body  passes through. The opening is longer than that of a CT scanner. The scanner produces loud  noises during the procedure that will require you to wear ear plugs or a head set to protect your  ears.

What is a CT Scan?

CT scanning—sometimes called CAT scanning—is a noninvasive, painless medical test that  helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

CT imaging uses special X-Ray equipment to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside  of the body and a computer to join them together in cross-sectional views of the area being  studied. The images can then be examined on a computer monitor or printed.

CT scans of internal organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity than  conventional X-Ray exams.
